The Ten Most Important Papers in C-L Psychiatry for the 2020-2021 Academic Year

Introduction: Consultation-liaison psychiatry is a remarkably broad field. Thus, it is difficult to remain abreast of advances in the many areas of medicine relevant to the field. Our aim is to present the ten most important papers from the 2020-2021 academic year, as rated by members of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Guidelines and Evidence Based Medicine Subcommittee.
Methods: The Subcommittee publishes annotated abstracts on the Academy website quarterly. All subcommittee members are invited to rate all annotated articles on clinical importance to practice and quality of scholarship, and our recent work demonstrates good to excellent interrater reliability using this method. We will present the top ten rated articles, published between July of 2020 and June of 2021. Dr. Bienvenu will discuss the methods of the subcommittee and the annotation section of the Academy website. The five speakers will each present two of the top ten papers, discussing the findings, the relevance of the work for consultation-liaison psychiatrists, and the strengths and weaknesses of each study.
Results: As of the time of abstract submission, the 2020-2021 academic year is still underway (i.e., some highly relevant and well-done studies have been published only recently, or will be published in the next 3 months). However, based on the first 6 months of data, we expect to present studies on the prognostic importance of delirium trajectory, the risk of sexually transmitted infections in patients with schizophrenia, the neurologic sequelae of COVID-19, the renal risk of lithium in older patients, the beneficial effects of mindfulness interventions for patients with cancer, and approximately five more recent clinically important and methodologically rigorous articles.
Conclusions: The top 10 articles will offer valuable guidance to consultation-liaison psychiatrists in various practice areas. This presentation will also highlight the annotated abstract section of the Academy website, which includes approximately 25 new entries per quarter and is seeing increasing use.

Joe Bienvenu
Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences | Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Dr. Bienvenu studied medicine at LSU in Shreveport, then completed psychiatry residency, a fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology, and a PhD in Clinical Investigation at Johns Hopkins. He began his clinical research career studying the epidemiology and genetic epidemiology of anxiety and related mood disorders, particularly as they relate to general personality traits. For the last 15 years, he has been focused on anxiety and depressive disorders in critical illness survivors. He is Vice Chair of the Guidelines and Evidence-Based Practice Subcommittee at ACLP.
Sarah Andrews
Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences | Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Dr. Sarah Andrews is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed both her medical school education and psychiatry residency training at Johns Hopkins. She served as a Chief Resident during residency. After residency, she joined the Department of Psychiatry to pursue her interests in both transplant and substance use disorder research. She serves as a consultation psychiatrist within the Comprehensive Transplant Center, completing evaluations and providing on-going psychiatric care for transplant patients. She also serves as the Service Line Director for the substance abuse inpatient units at Johns Hopkins, including a detoxification unit and a dual diagnosis unit. Her interests include integrating mental health treatment into the care of transplant patients, managing substance use disorders in transplant patients, and improving long-term outcomes following acute detoxification.
Carlos Fernandez-Robles
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry | Massachusetts General Hospital
Dr. Fernandez-Robles completed his psychiatry residency at the University of Miami, trained in consultation-liaison psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, and later completed an MBA at the Yale School of Management. His mission is to lead the development of sustainable, patient-centered innovations, and he thrives working with multidisciplinary teams and leveraging all types of resources to improve clinical operations and organizational performance. His areas of focus include collaborative care, psycho-oncology, electroconvulsive therapy, and resident/fellow teaching.
Luis F. Pereira
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry | Columbia University Irving Medical Center
Dr. Pereira graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2004, and completed a 5-year residency program in Internal Medicine in 2011. Because of his interest in HIV infection, he obtained a Master's Degree in HIV/AIDS in 2009 from the University of Barcelona, Spain. In 2017, he graduated from Mount Sinai Beth Israel's Psychiatry Residency Program and in 2018 completed a fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital, New York. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University/New York-Presbyterian Hospital, co-chair of the HIV Special Interest Group of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and secretary of the HIV/AIDS Section of the World Psychiatric Association.
Sahil Munjal
Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine | Wake Forest School of Medicine
Dr. Sahil Munjal trained in medicine at the University of Delhi, India, completed his psychiatry residency at New York Medical College at Westchester Medical Center, and completed his consultation-liaison fellowship at Yale University. He is currently an assistant professor of psychiatry and director of the psychiatry clerkship for the third-year medical students at Wake Forest School of Medicine. His academic interests are in the integration of medical and psychiatric illness, psychopharmacology, ethical issues in medicine and medical student education.
