Fundamentals of C-L Psychiatry
The goal of this course is to introduce new practitioners to the field of C-L Psychiatry. The course has a revolving list of topics, covering about five topics per year, with the objective of covering most of the basics over a 3-year cycle. Jose Maldonado
Professor - Associate Division Chief Adult Psychiatry, Consultation Psychiatry | Stanford University
His research lab developed the Stanford Integrated Psychosocial Assessment for Transplantation (SIPAT) a tool created to assess the psychosocial candidacy of organ transplant and ventricular assisted devices (VADs) candidates. In addition, his research has led the field of Psychosomatic Medicine with the development of tools for the prediction and assessment of various neuropsychiatric disorders; including the development of a new tool for the timely and accurate diagnosis of delirium: the Stanford Proxy Test of Delirium (S-PTD); the Stanford Algorithm for Predicting Delirium (SAPD), a tool to help predict patients at risk for developing delirium; and the Prediction of Alcohol Withdrawal Severity Scale (PAWSS). He has developed management protocols and algorithms for the prevention and treatment of delirium; as well as novel pharmacological techniques (benzodiazepine-sparing protocol) for the prophylaxis and treatment of complicated alcohol withdrawal syndromes.
Dr Maldonado has been the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions, the most recent includle: the 2017 – Franz-Köhler-Inflammation-Award from the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) for extraordinary achievements in research on inflammation and its relationship to the pathophysiology of delirium; and the 2018 – Eleanor and Thomas P. Hackett Memorial Award by the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, the Academy’s highest honor, for distinctive achievements in CLP training, research, clinical practice, and leadership.
Laura A Markley
Medical Director of C-L Psychiatry | Akron Children's Hospital
Dr. Markley is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Northeast Ohio Medical University. She graduated from the Triple Board Residency at the University of Utah Medical Center in 2009, then moved back to Ohio to practice. She recently achieved an additional Board Certification in Addiction Medicine. Dr. Markley’s interests are varied and include substance abuse (particularly the novel designer drugs of abuse), psychopharmacology of the medically ill, and collaborative care. Teaching is a passion of hers, and she is involved in teaching activities in several settings.
Scott Simpson
Medical Director, Psychiatric Emergency Services | Denver Health Medical Center
Dr. Simpson received his bachelor's degree in history from Yale University, his Masters of Public Health from Harvard University, and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed psychiatry residency and a fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is board-certified in adult psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, and addiction medicine.
