Eleanor & Thomas P. Hackett Memorial Award Lecture: From Boston to Austin: A Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Journey
Consultation-liaison psychiatry and the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry have evolved significantly over the last 40 years. Illustrated by the clinical and scientific responses to major pandemics (e.g., HIV and COVID), the subspecialty of consultation-liaison psychiatry integrates an inclusive approach to a wide range of psychiatric illnesses, routine utilization of detailed medical evaluations of patients, and a biopsychosocial approach to comprehensive patient care. The subspecialty has further differentiated its clinical and research subject matter in response to advances in various specialties in medicine. Consultation-liaison psychiatry has also developed modern and integrative service models. Consultation-liaison psychiatry is positioned to lead the specialty of psychiatry in the contemporary medical care delivery system.
